Searx

Searx is a privacy-respecting metasearch engine and search result aggregator. It functions as a self-hosted search proxy that queries diverse web services, databases, and local indices to present a single unified list of results.

The project prevents user tracking and profiling by acting as an intermediary between the client and search services. It strips identifying information from queries, removes tracker URLs and HTTP referrers from outgoing links, and can route traffic through proxies or the Tor network to mask user identity.

The system supports multilingual search and result filtering using specific operators. It includes programmatic integration via APIs and data exports to RSS or CSV, as well as the ability to query external SQL and NoSQL data stores.

Deployment is supported through automated scripts and containerized environments.

Features

  • Metasearch Engines - Functions as a privacy-respecting metasearch engine that aggregates results from multiple external providers.
  • Privacy Protection - Acts as an intermediary between clients and search services to block tracking and profiling of user activity.
  • Search Result Aggregators - Collects, normalizes, and structures search results from multiple heterogeneous external data sources.
  • Metasearch Query Routing - Implements the core mechanism of sending user queries to multiple external engines and unifying the responses.
  • Anonymity Network Routing - Uses anonymity networks like Tor to route search queries and mask user identities.
  • Tracking Parameter Removers - Strips identifying tracking parameters and HTTP referrers from outgoing links to prevent user profiling.
  • Anonymization Proxies - Routes outgoing requests through intermediary servers or the Tor network to hide the user's identity and instance IP.
  • Tor Routing - Integrates with the Tor network to route traffic and ensure online anonymity during searches.
  • Privacy-Preserving Search Tools - Implements a privacy-first architecture that aggregates search results while preventing third-party tracking.
  • Privacy and Anonymity Tools - Provides tools for protecting network traffic privacy by removing tracker URLs and HTTP referrers.
  • Result Proxies - Uses a dedicated result proxy to mask the origin of requests and enhance user privacy.
  • Search Query Interfaces - Provides interfaces to execute search queries against connected SQL, NoSQL, or full-text indexers.
  • Search Result Exporters - Exports aggregated search data into formats like RSS or CSV for use in external applications.
  • Search Result Filtering - Includes mechanisms for applying constraints and operators to refine search results and manage content quality.
  • Multilingual Search Engines - Supports querying multiple engines across different languages to retrieve a broader set of global results.
  • Search Engine Configuration - Provides settings to control enabled search engines, priority levels, and the use of HTTPS or proxies.
  • Engine Configuration Mappings - Allows the mapping of user queries to specific external search services via central configuration files.
  • Self-Hosted Search Services - Provides containerized deployment options to host a private search instance for local or public access.
  • Anonymizing Proxies - Acts as a private intermediary server that masks user identities and routes search requests via proxies or Tor.
  • Traffic Routing Proxies - Routes outgoing requests through Socks or HTTP proxies to mask origin or bypass network restrictions.
  • Plugin Extenders - Enables the integration of new search engines and the addition of custom features via a modular plugin system.
  • Modular Plugin Architectures - Provides a modular system for adding new search engines and custom features via pluggable software modules.
  • Search and Discovery - Privacy-focused metasearch engine with a modular architecture.
  • Search and Translation - Privacy-respecting internet metasearch engine.
