ResearchKit

ResearchKit is an open-source framework for building iOS applications that conduct medical research studies. It provides reusable components for creating study apps that collect participant data through surveys, sensor-driven active tasks, and digital informed consent workflows.

The framework includes a step-based survey builder for constructing multi-step questionnaires, an active task engine that guides participants through structured physical and cognitive assessments while capturing device sensor data, and a visual consent workflow that guides participants through study details with on-device signature capture. ResearchKit also offers a care plan scheduler for managing structured regimens of tasks and activities with timing and completion tracking, along with a secure data sharing layer that connects participants with study coordinators through encrypted data transmission channels.

Additional capabilities include chart-based data visualization for displaying collected research data as interactive graphs, template-based app scaffolding to generate a complete study application skeleton, and tools for building personalized care plans and tracking patient-reported symptoms over time. The framework supports sensor-based health assessments that measure motor skills, cognition, hearing, and other physiological functions, as well as ECG validation for cardiac event detection.
