Hocus

Hocus is a self-hosted platform for managing containerized development environments. It automates the lifecycle of isolated coding workspaces, allowing teams to provision and destroy ephemeral development instances on their own infrastructure.

The platform utilizes declarative configuration files to ensure consistent tooling and dependencies across distributed engineering teams. By leveraging infrastructure-as-code orchestration, it eliminates environment drift and simplifies the onboarding process for new contributors.

Users can extend base container images to create tailored environments that meet specific project requirements. The system also supports metadata-driven resource tagging, enabling organizations to track infrastructure usage and project labels through custom key-value pairs.

Features

  • Remote Development Platforms - Provides a self-hosted platform that provisions disposable, containerized development environments on your own infrastructure.
  • Infrastructure as Code - Manages the lifecycle of remote development containers by interfacing with container runtimes to provision and destroy resources on demand.
  • Container Development Environments - Extends base container images to define specific software and tools required for unique project workflows.
  • Declarative Environment Configurations - Uses version-controlled configuration files to automatically install software and set up project workspaces.
  • Containerized Workspace Managers - Automates the setup and configuration of isolated coding environments using custom container images and project metadata.
  • Infrastructure as Code - Automates the setup of standardized development environments using configuration files to eliminate environment drift.
  • Remote Development Environments - Enables accessing full-featured development environments from any browser or local editor for secure remote coding.
  • Self-Hosted Infrastructure - Provisions isolated, containerized coding workspaces on your own infrastructure to ensure consistent tooling.
  • Self-Hosted SaaS Alternatives - Offers a server-side orchestration tool that provides ready-to-code environments to ensure identical tooling across a team.
  • Workspace Isolation - Provides isolated container instances to ensure consistent tooling and dependencies across different user machines.
  • Cloud Workspace Management - Manages the lifecycle of disposable development containers to optimize resource usage and simplify onboarding.

This project provides a remote development extension pack and infrastructure for bootstrapping isolated toolchains and runtimes. It enables a system for opening folders and executing code across SSH hosts, Docker containers, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux. The system utilizes a client-server split architecture to separate the user interface from the extension host and language servers. It features a secure connection layer for SSH remote editing, a bridge for WSL integration, and a remote port forwarding tool to tunnel network traffic from remote environments to a local machine.
