Ckan

CKAN is an open-source data management platform that provides the foundation for building data portals. It supports the full lifecycle of datasets—from creation and organization to publishing, cataloging with faceted search, and interactive data visualization—all through a web interface.

The platform is built on a modular architecture that includes a plugin-based extensibility system, a harvesting framework for importing metadata from external sources, and a standardized RESTful JSON API for programmatic access to datasets and metadata. The web interface is rendered using the Jinja2 templating engine, and its look and feel can be customized through themes, templates, and custom CSS.

Under the hood, CKAN stores dataset metadata in a PostgreSQL database indexed with Apache Solr for fast faceted search and filtering, while uploaded data files are kept in a configurable external file store such as the local filesystem or Amazon S3.

Features

  • Data Portals - Runs a centralized catalog and publishing platform for open datasets with search, metadata, and access controls.
  • Dataset Publishing - Allows users to upload, describe, and share datasets through a web interface.
  • Data Catalogs - Organizes datasets into a searchable catalog with faceted browsing for efficient discovery.
  • Metadata Harvesters - Imports metadata from external sources via scheduled harvest jobs that transform and merge records.
  • File Store Backends - Manages uploaded files in configurable storage (local filesystem or S3) while storing metadata in PostgreSQL.
  • Dataset Catalogs - Organizes datasets into a searchable catalog with faceted browsing for efficient discovery.
  • Dataset Management - Provides centralized creation, organization, and access control management for datasets.
  • Solr-Powered Search Indexes - Provides a metadata catalog indexed with Apache Solr for fast faceted search and filtering.
  • REST APIs - Provides a standardized RESTful JSON API for programmatic access to datasets and metadata.
  • Jinja2 Template Renderers - Renders the web interface using server-side Jinja2 templates that can be overridden by custom themes.
  • Hook-Based Plugin Systems - Extends core functionality through a hook-based plugin system that can override any part of the platform.
  • Dataset Sharing - Shares datasets and metadata through a programmatic API for external integration.
  • RESTful Data APIs - Provides a RESTful JSON API for programmatic retrieval of metadata and data.
  • Data Visualization - Transforms dataset contents into interactive charts and graphs for in-browser exploration.
  • Dataset Explorers - Converts raw dataset content into interactive charts and graphs for in-browser exploration.
  • Interface Appearance Customizations - Allows customization of the web interface's look and feel using themes, templates, and custom CSS.
  • Data Catalog - Data management system for powering data portals.
  • Data Catalogs - Open-source data portal platform for publishing and managing datasets.
  • Digital Archiving - Tool for building and managing open data websites.
  • Scientific Research Tools - Data management system for publishing and sharing datasets.
  • Content Management and Localization - Manages and publishes open data portals.
