Traccar

Traccar is an open-source GPS tracking server that receives location data from over 2000 device models using 200 different communication protocols, functioning as a multi-protocol device gateway for real-time position monitoring and fleet management. It provides a self-hosted fleet management platform deployable on Windows, Linux, or cloud infrastructure, with a geofencing engine that defines virtual boundaries and triggers configurable alerts when devices enter or exit those zones.

The server delivers real-time device positions, events, and status updates to connected clients through WebSocket-based live streaming, and supports token-based API authentication for password-free access to the REST API. It includes a plugin-based protocol handler that allows adding support for new device protocols without modifying core server code, and offers multi-provider reverse geocoding to convert GPS coordinates into human-readable addresses through a pluggable interface.

The platform provides account and device management tools for organizing users, devices, and permissions, along with a report generation engine that produces trip, chart, summary, and history reports viewable in-app or exportable as Excel files. It supports automated command sending to devices, custom attribute computation from device-reported values, and map visualization with customizable layers for enhanced situational awareness.

The server can be deployed with horizontal scaling using PostgreSQL, MySQL, or TimescaleDB for high availability, and supports OpenID Connect single sign-on authentication through external identity providers.
