Netshoot

Netshoot is a Docker network troubleshooting toolkit and container image bundled with specialized utilities for DNS resolution, performance benchmarking, and TCP/IP packet inspection. It serves as a portable set of tools designed for diagnosing connectivity and routing issues within Docker and Kubernetes environments.

The project is distributed as a tool-aggregated container image that can be deployed as a debugging sidecar or an ephemeral runtime. It supports namespace-joined execution, allowing the toolkit to attach to the network namespace of another process to inspect traffic and diagnose communication from a specific perspective.

The suite covers a wide range of network diagnostic capabilities, including DNS resolution debugging, IP routing management, and port scanning. It provides tools for network performance measurement, packet traffic analysis, and connection testing across TCP, UDP, and gRPC protocols, as well as utilities for SMTP transaction testing and container resource monitoring.

Features

  • Tool-Aggregated Images - Bundles a curated set of networking binaries into a single image for deployment as a sidecar or ephemeral container.
  • Diagnostics - Launching a specialized toolset into a network namespace to troubleshoot communication failures for specific containers.
  • Packet Capture Utilities - Provides capabilities to capture and inspect raw TCP/IP packets to diagnose communication failures.
  • Ephemeral Diagnostics - Launches short-lived container instances to perform diagnostics and minimize resource overhead.
  • Sidecar Containers - Deploys as a sidecar container to monitor and inspect traffic without modifying the target application image.
  • Network Namespace Sharing - Attaches to the network namespace of another process to diagnose connectivity from a specific container's perspective.
  • Connection Testers - Provides the capability to verify port availability and detect firewall blocks via TCP and UDP connection tests.
  • DNS Management Tools - Provides a suite of utilities for verifying name resolution and managing IP routing tables.
  • DNS Record Resolvers - Includes tools to query DNS servers for detailed record information and verify name resolution settings.
  • Protocol Connectivity Diagnostics - Integrates specialized tools for TCP, UDP, DNS, and gRPC to validate connectivity across the network stack.
  • Network Performance Testers - Ships utilities to measure bandwidth and throughput between hosts to identify performance bottlenecks.
  • Network Traffic Analyzers - Captures and inspects TCP/IP packets to identify communication errors and analyze protocol behavior.
  • Network Traffic Routing - Includes specialized utilities for controlling TCP/IP networking and directing traffic routing.
  • Network Troubleshooting Tools - Provides a container image packed with networking tools for diagnosing connectivity and routing issues in Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Cluster Network Diagnostics - Diagnoses connectivity and routing issues between services and containers within Kubernetes clusters.
  • Network Performance - Measures bandwidth and throughput between hosts to identify and resolve network performance bottlenecks.
  • Binary Distribution Tools - Packages pre-compiled network utilities as static binaries to ensure availability without external package managers.
  • API Validation Tools - Ships a command line interface to send requests to gRPC servers and verify endpoint functionality.
  • Client Utilities - Provides a command-line interface for sending requests to gRPC servers to verify API functionality.
  • Port Scanners - Includes tools for identifying open network ports and services across defined address ranges.
  • Application Layer Validation - Offers tools for validating application-layer communication, including gRPC and SMTP transactions.
  • Network Benchmarking Utilities - Provides utilities for measuring bandwidth, throughput, and latency to identify network bottlenecks.
  • Real-Time Network Monitors - Provides tools for observing live network traffic and bandwidth usage in real-time.
  • Networking And Proxies - Troubleshooting container with comprehensive networking tools.
  • Networking Utilities - Provides a container for network troubleshooting.
